April 17 – Amazon Cruise on the Iberastar Grand Amazon

We are being picked up this afternoon for the transfer to our cruise boat.  So, we spent the morning in the room working and reading.  We opted to have a late breakfast so that we wouldn’t need to eat lunch.  We figure there will likely be food on the boat when we get there.

It had started to rain by the time we were picked up.  It is in the middle of the rainy season.  That means wet weather but it also means very high waters on the Amazon, so our sightseeing boats will be able to get into smaller streams and rivers.

We made it to the harbor…

and onto the boat with a minimal amount of wetness. We waited in the lounge until our room was ready and did a quick visit to the room before heading up to the top deck where there were drinks and snacks.

Wilson, one of the staff, immediately targeted us.  He must have heard us speak English.  Most of the guests are Brazilian and we think Wilson might be the one that tries to work with English speaking guests.  I commented that his English was excellent with a minimal accent.  Turns out he is from Guyana, formerly British Guiana, so English is his first language.

He introduced us to a group of Canadians and Americans.  Most of the group are in Brazil on a mission for the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and they were taking a vacation.  They were a friendly group.

We eventually ended up having dinner with them.  Wilson had set up a reserved table for the group and they were able to squeeze a couple more chairs in.  Having others to visit with makes the trips more fun.
